    Re: Self defense classes

Following is a post I made several months ago on a mma forum. Please note that this was not intended for gender specific self defense and require signifance training:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
For years I taught a self defense oriented martial arts curriculum, it eventually became more focused on grappling and MMA, but I still maintained a strong interest in the self defense aspect.

Following are three simple techniques that are tried and true. I have used each of these over the years, either while working as bar security or in actual defense of myself while being attacked. At least one former student used two of these numerous times with a very high degree of success.

    1. Front thrust kick to the front tip of pelvic bone.

This is not the upward angled snap kick of karate, but an all out driving kick bringing your weight and momentum with it.

Strike with the ball of the foot. Target is the boney area just below the bladder and just above the groin. Start the strike from just outside your normal leg reach. Drive the kick as straight in as possible while bringing your entire body forward with the kick. slide your base foot along to maintain balance.

Similar to the Thai push kick but with more bad intentions and more commitment.

Effect will be an actual folding reaction from the target if landed well.

Works especially well against the guy who "squares up" and tries to intimidate with size.

    2. Lead hand trap followed by right cross.

This works well against the fighter who puts his hands up in a semblance of a boxing stance, but has his hands extended out too far.

If he is in an orthodox stance (left lead) trap his left with your left. Not the fancy trap of Wing Chun or something like that, but just reach out quickly and grab his wrist.

Pull the hand out a bit and also slightly towards his center-line. This will prevent him from having a proper angle to strike you with his other hand or a kick. While at the same time stepping in slightly with your own lead foot and bringing the right cross in over the trap.

This seems too simple to work. In fact it works with incredible regularity.

    3. Leading finger jab.

    Yeah, I said finger jab.

In boxing you learn that a relaxed hand makes for a much faster punch.

In this case you simply throw a speed jab, but instead of closing the fist on impact as taught in boxing, you extend the fingers out with some tension but slightly curled (to prevent them from being bent backwards from contact with any part of the skull).

Do not extend just one or two fingers. Keep them all together.

You will find this is an incredibly fast technique.

Aim for either eye. You will find that the slightest contact with either eye will result in both eyes closing, at least at first. Also, you will likely see a reaction of panic.

This is for serious self defense situations only and could easily result in blindness for the other party.

Not many Ninja's, although we did have two show up at our old kickboxing academy in about '88 or so. They left limping rather badly....

What are everywhere is pill-heads and thieves and things aren't going to get any better for some time.

I bet if a ninja didn't have the whole element of surprise thing going for them they would be SOL

    Re: Self defense classes

LOL, there are several Ninjitsu schools around regionally. They actually tend to be a little better than most TMA's (that's traditional martial arts) but are still missing the boat.

    Re: Self defense classes

These guys were from Tennessee and actually taught Ninjitsu.

The few people on a world wide basis who call themselves ninja's and seem serious minded about it train primarily with fully automatic weapons and explosives. Why throw a piece of sharp metal at someone when you can shoot them instead.

BTW, some of the best self defense schools, including ones specializing in women's self defense like Grace Casillas' academy put a lot of time into handgun training, and I don't mean handgun defense. After all the ultimate self defense system is advanced-handgun-do.
